OUR STORY

Karla had just returned home from Hong Kong, carrying with her a heart full of memories and a quiet longing for the place she had grown to love. Adjusting back wasn’t easy. Everything felt familiar, yet somehow different, and there were days when she missed Hong Kong more than she could explain.

In the middle of that in-between season, she attended an FSY training—unaware that something small, almost forgettable, was about to change everything.

At the end of the training, a man she had never met before approached her. Darren struck up a conversation, asking about her experience as a missionary in Hong Kong. It wasn’t anything grand—just a simple exchange, the kind you wouldn’t think twice about. To Karla, he was just someone she happened to talk to that day.

But sometimes, the most ordinary beginnings hold the most unexpected endings.

In the weeks that followed, two of Karla’s close friends kept mentioning Darren. They encouraged her to get to know him, dropping hints here and there about his interest. Karla, still adjusting and carrying her own hesitations, wasn’t quick to entertain the idea. Life felt too fresh, too uncertain.

Still, she agreed to meet him as a group date.

Their first real meeting happened during LCO days at CSU, alongside friends Nica and Matet. They wandered around the campus halls, bought matching bracelets like a group of friends just enjoying the day, and shared meals filled with laughter. It was light, easy, and unforced—the kind of moment that doesn’t try too hard to be special, but somehow becomes memorable anyway.

Nothing dramatic happened.

And yet, something quietly started.

Not long after, Darren reached out to Karla on Messenger.

Somewhere in the middle of getting to know each other, he invited her out on a simple date—to try something he was oddly confident about: avocado. At Avocadaria, he convinced her to take a taste, insisting it was “so good.” Between hesitant first bites and shared laughs, the day unfolded into something unexpectedly warm.

And somehow, that simple date became a turning point.

After that, conversations didn’t just continue—they never seemed to end.

Messages turned into calls, and calls turned into late nights—often stretching past midnight, sometimes ending at 1 or even 2 in the morning. They talked about everything: life, past experiences, “what ifs,” decisions, and even playful, romantic questions in between laughter.

Karla talked more (as she always does), and Darren listened—patient, steady, and present.

One night, as Darren walked Karla home after spending time together, he gathered the courage to say what he had been quietly carrying all along.

He told her he liked her.

And more than that—he wanted to get to know her.

That moment felt different.

For Karla, it wasn’t simple. There were pressures, lingering fears, and parts of her past that made her hesitate. There were moments she almost pulled away, unsure if she was ready to open her heart again.

But Darren never rushed her.

He stayed.

Consistent. Patient. Persistent in the gentlest way. He never gave up—even when it would have been easier to. And slowly, through ordinary days and quiet efforts, he became part of her world.

Time passed, and something in Karla began to change.

By October, she could no longer ignore what she felt. The uncertainty she once held had softened into something steady—something sure.

She knew.

On October 19, they went on another simple date—one that Darren thought was just like any other.

But Karla had something planned.

Instead of grand gestures, she chose something that felt exactly like them: personal, playful, and meaningful. She handed him a series of questions—some easy, some tricky, and some that made him second-guess himself (including getting her birthday wrong… January 26 instead of 25 😄).

Darren answered each one with determination, even when he stumbled, trying his best to get everything right. He didn’t know it yet, but every answer was leading him somewhere.

Until the last part.

Numbers turned into letters.

25, 5 and 19.

He paused.

And then it hit him.

Y E S

In that moment, everything became clear.

Karla had given her answer.

And just like that, on a simple day filled with laughter and a little bit of math, they became officially together.

What followed was a love that grew not in grand, dramatic moments—but in consistency. Darren proved, day after day, that he would stay. Through mood swings, doubts, and everything in between, he remained gentle, humble, and steady—the kind of love that doesn’t leave.

He showed not only love for Karla, but also his strength of character: hardworking, balancing school and work, caring deeply for his family, and quietly building a future he could offer.

And for Karla, that became her certainty.

A love that started slowly … became the kind that stayed.

And this year, on February 14, Darren asked the question once more—this time for forever.

She said "YES".

Now, they can’t wait to begin the next chapter of their story—the one they will write together.

A slow love that waited…

until it became certain.
